Sponsor A Pet

Our Sponsor A Pet program was created to help us care for those unfortunate animals for whom no permanent home can ever be found. See their individual stories to find out why.

Dogs

Binnie

This is Binnie. Binnie got his name since his only source of food was rummaging thru bins and garbage cans. We aren't certain about his age, 7, maybe 8 years or thereabouts? Some "Kind" soul took pity on him and was going to call the dogwarden to have him put down, those clanging bins made too much noise they said. Well, that's Binnie's story in a "bin lid" Binnie will never lose the fear to try and figure out where his next meal is going to come from, so he will defend his turf against anything, no matter how big. Binnie, like the others in our program, is now safe, will you help us to keep his tummy filled forever?

Please support the ACS by sponsoring Binnie. Your support will help pay for his food, warm bedding and most importantly veterinary care.

Bren

I'm Bren and this is my story. My owner died and the relatives locked me, my sister and Mum into a shed, FOR THREE YEARS! When they finally took pity on me and took me to the vet to be put down the vet called the ACS for help, he did not want to see me killed. Sadly, my sister was too far gone and could not be saved. A family member took pity on Mum and took her home. I was so terrified of people that it was a very long time before I let anybody near me and I am still a bit nervous but my foster Mum says she sees progress. That's my story, will you help care for me?

Please support the ACS by sponsoring Bren. Your support will help pay for his food, warm bedding and most importantly veterinary care.

Daisy

This is Daisy, to get her photographed took a lot of effort. She is so desperately scared of men and there is no way, no way to get near her. She was thrown out of a vehicle and you would not know she was a dog, instead a bag of bones with skin stretched taunt would be a better description. Her fosterer is working on her terror of men, God only knows what cruelty has been inflicted on her to instil such fear into her. Daisy is facing a long road to recovery but we will try to make her see that not all humans are evil. She needs your help, just like the others do.

Please support the ACS by sponsoring Daisy. Your support will help pay for her food, warm bedding and most importantly veterinary care.

Sally

Meet Sally. Here is her story. Sally was left for dead in a farm yard. She was dumped in the road by "people" who had no more use for her. We think she is about 9 years old. One of her front legs was broken at some stage during her life, the break was never treated and healed badly so Sally hasn't got the full use of her leg. Sal, as she is affectionately known, is a lurcher cross. When she was found she had no hair and was covered in mange. Sally adores her fosterer but is worried about strangers, can you blame her?

Please help Sally by sponsoring her, it will make a world of difference to her. Your support will help pay for her food, warm bedding and most importantly veterinary care.

Merlin

This is Merlin, aptly named for he indeed had that famous wizards luck. Of all places, Merlin was found in a sea cave. Yes, you read that right. An American couple, exploring the beautiful West Cork coastline in their yacht heard him bark. The lowered their rowing boat and got him from the cave.

Judging by the skeleton state he was in, and bearing in mind that the only access to the cave was the sea entrance he must have been dumped over the cliff, or thrown overboard and had been in there for several days. They said that they never ever had seen a dog drink so much water so fast, Merlin was close to death from dehydration.

Merlin suffers from very poor eyesight, has a heart murmur and is extremely afraid of men. But, he loves Helen, his fosterer, and is great friends with her lovely Ginger cat. He requires close supervision and because of his medical problems and his history can't be rehomed. Like Shep he requires that one in a million home so that he can receive the special care and love he needs. Please help us by sponsoring him so that the ACS can be that one in a million home for him as long as is needed.

Please support the ACS by sponsoring Merlin. Your support will help pay for his food, warm bedding and most importantly veterinary care.

Guinness

Guinness has only one eye, but loves people. He is a permanent resident with an ACS fosterer as he was found as a 10 month old puppy, underweight, mangy and blind in 1 eye.

He was immediately brought to a veterinary surgeon that treated his eye and skin condition. Unfortunately Guinness had to have his eye removed and is now recovering with an ACS fosterer. He is practically back to full health but because of his traumatic start in life he can never be removed to a home environment. Guinness will remain forever in the care of an ACS and therefore needs your help.

Please support the ACS by sponsoring Guinness. Your support will help pay for his food, warm bedding and most importantly veterinary care.

Jennie Girl

This is Jennie Girl as she is affectionately known, her story is one of sadness but one which also has a happy note, so read on. Jennie was dumped with her companion in a disused gravel quarry pit and left there to die. The walls were too steep to climb and even if she had been able to get out she would have perished, because Jennie is totally blind.

Her death of starvation and thirst would have been too awful to dwell on. But, from high above somebody smiled on Jennie and decided that she and her small Jack Russell companion were not to die. An ACS supporter walking his dogs in this remote area heard her weak cries and decided to investigate and this is how she was found.

As you see from the photo her eyes are useless but that has not stopped this brave dog from once more giving her love and trust to a human being, and this time her love and trust have not been misplaced. Her special fosterer loves her like no other and Jennie Girls love is returned to her.

Would you please consider sponsoring her so her ongoing care can continue forever. Any amount will help us to provide a future for dogs like Jennie and our other sponsor animals. Jennie needs people like you, people who care and help save lives.

Cats

Sponsor The Schnoz!

When FIV cats aren’t cared for they can end up pretty rough. Here at the ACS we don’t try and rehome end-stage FIV cats - we care for them ourselves.

One such cat is Jimmy D (short for Durante). Like his namesake he has a rather large 'schnoz'. This Jimmy owes his large nose to a condition known as Pillow Foot, which causes the pads of the feet to become soft and mushy - like pillows. Jimmy's nose is also affected - one of his many 'quirks'. But his biggest challenge is FIV.

Jimmy was surrendered in an emaciated state with a huge, gaping abscess in his side. He recovered well from this, and has so far enjoyed reasonably good health. He has also found a life-long friend in Attila the Hun (also an ACS Sponsor Cat, pictured with Jimmy D). While he enjoys good health, he does suffer from slight bouts of cystitis and requires a special diet as a result. Asked how he managed to land on his feet, Jimmy simply smiles & grunts and demands more to eat!

Attila the Hun

This is Attila the Hun, Tila for short. He is about ten years old and one look at his face shows every year of it. This picture was taken three weeks after his rescue and you can see from his appearance that he still has a long way to before he is presentable. Tila had to have surgery to remove most of his ears due to cancerous growths, by the time he was rescued both ear tips were completely dead and removal was the only option. Tila was also castrated and FIV/Felv tested, sadly he turned out to be AIDS positive so finding a home for him has now become even more difficult. Tila also had a bad case of lice hence the reason for his bald nose. What he lacks in looks he makes up for in personality, Tila is very food driven, it’s very much a case of open mouth, inhale! He loves attention and petting but still has a problem with being picked up, a remainder from his long time as a stray. Someone somewhere did give him a home at some point but it has been a long time since he has had one. Tila survived for years by wandering and scavenging other pet cats leftovers, some people fed him but no one claimed him or offered him a home.

Tila's tale is one reflected by tens of thousands of cats in Ireland. He was unwanted and nothing was done about his suffering until he became a problem, then he had to be removed because he was deemed a nuisance. I got a call about him and headed out with my trap to capture him. To my surprise the feral cat I expected happily walked up to me when I offered him food and walked straight in to the trap with no hesitation. After his capture, I had a good look at him and the best description of him is one of a cat that had just been pulled through a manure pile. His white was so filthy it was difficult to figure out where his ginger ended and the white began. Before the surgery to remove his ears, Tila had to be on two courses of antibiotics to clear up the respiratory infection he suffered from.

We need a very special home for him. He is litter trained and as affectionate as they come. Are you that very special person out there to take him into your heart and home ? Please ?

Princess

If there are stories which break our hearts, you are reading one. Look at this Mum and her kittens. Please look at her. A happy Mum and her baby's right? WRONG. This is Princess and she is paralysed! Not even the finest vet in the land can explain how she managed to give birth. We certainly don't know. A huge Tom did this to her, the same Tom which so maimed her sister that she could not be saved. The same Tom which killed all the sisters kittens, one by one. The future for Princess is uncertain, this happened six (6!) months ago and she was not taken to a vet for treatment. As the owner was afraid that the vet would put her down. How she got pregnant we do not understand, we cannot understand, this cat is paralysed! She is an adorable cat and a fantastic Mum, she dotes on her kittens and cares for them like no other.

For now Princess is safe, she is with us, The Animal CARE Society. We are proud of our name and she is living proof of it.

Please support the ACS by sponsoring Princess. Your support will help pay for her food, warm bedding and most importantly veterinary care.

Bennie

My name is Bennie. Here is my story:
I was attacked by a dog and have suffered a broken pelvis, very badly fractured femur, and a dreadful infection has set in, spreading thru my body from the bite wounds. The vet says that I might have to lose my rear leg but better my leg than my life. I'm at the vet clinic at the moment, the ACS vet is trying to bring that infection under control. He cannot operate while it is so bad, I would not survive.

My anticipated (reduced) bill will be more than €500. The ACS needs help, their vets bills last year were close on €90,000 and they are unable to find this extra money. Please please help me. I am only two years old. Every euro you donate will go to my operation. Please click on the donate icon. Thank you. This photo of me was taken before the accident. Bennie.

Stop press: Bennie is holding his own. The infection had gotten into his bone marrow but Tom the vet has done everything in his power to bring it under control. The good news is that Bennie still has feeling in the leg and maybe, just maybe, his leg can be saved, Tom and Leslie (his nurse) told us that in all their years of practice they have never seen a more loveable and kinder cat. Not a claw or paw has ever been raised to them. We will keep you posted on Bennie and his progress.

UPDATE: Bennie has been moved from the vet to the ACS sanctuary where he continues to make progress. He is been given cage rest as the break in his leg is pinned and he is not allowed to get up to his antics, which he would if we would let him. 4 weeks in a cage is no fun, but. it is a lot better than being dead !

The ACS wishes to THANK all our supporters who helped contribute to his considerable bill, together with us you our readers helped to save his life. We also say Thanks to Tom and Leslie (Vet and Nurse) who cared for him and helped him every inch of the way. We'll keep you posted on his progress.

Please support the ACS by sponsoring Bennie. Your support will help pay for his food, warm bedding and most importantly veterinary care.

Muppet

Hello, I am Muppet. I know, I know, a strange name for a boy but when they picked me up I was so poorly they couldn't figure out if I was a boy or a girl. I'm telling you...those welfare people!!!

A bit about myself? Well, if you insist. I'm a male and very lovely cat, even if I have to say so myself, I'm housetrained, neutered, love people and need a home. I was dumped down a small country lane and the last thing I remember was a pair of tail lights speeding of.

I managed to survive for a week or so till my luck changed and an ACS volunteer saw me and took me into care. Unfortunately, I tested positive for Feline Aids. Now before you stop reading, please note that you can't get it from me and also note that I am very well at the moment. I'm telling you, a little bit of extra care and a good diet goes a long way to keep my illness at bay. ( No pun intended!) So, that's it in a nutshell. Question is, how big is your heart? Is there a place for me in your heart or your home?

No, I cannot become your outdoor "ratter and mouser". I can however give you love and kindness and be your companion.

Please support the ACS by sponsoring Muppet. Your support will help pay for his food, warm bedding and most importantly veterinary care.

Rocky Thump

Rocky Thump, so called because he rocks around the place, and then falls THUMP on the floor! (he doesn't hurt himself we promise!!). He's approximately two & a half years old, and is white and ginger, long haired, and very determined to do whatever he wants to. He even climbs trees, although it's a bit risky for him...He was found together with his brother (same colouring, but short-haired), dumped in a farm gate, in July 03. Their eyes were glued together, and they had cat flue. Both recovered well from that, but Rocky contracted a mild form of FEV, which destroys the part of the brain that controls balance, so he can't walk properly. His back legs go faster than his front. In fact he runs just like a rabbit! His brother was rehomed, but Rocky is a special case, and needed a special home, which never materialised.

Now he is too set in his ways and knows the area and other cats too well, to re-home him. He will forever remain with an ACS fosterer.

Please support the ACS by sponsoring Rocky Thump. Your support will help pay for his food, cat litter, warm bedding and veterinary care.

Delilah

Delilah was found being attacked by 2/3 dogs in 2003. She was rescued by a mother and daughter and was quite traumatised by the attack. Therefore needed to be homed with an experienced cat fosterer. Unfortunately we do not know Delilah's exact history but we do know that she belonged to someone at some point as she was spayed before being rescued. However, one thing is for certain, regarding her past; she was not loved and cared for as an animal should be.

Delilah's personality is one that is wary of humans and she will remain forever with an ACS fosterer. Delilah's temperament is gradually softening.3 years on! She is very territorial and certainly 'rules the roost' where she lives!

Please support the ACS by sponsoring Delilah. Your support will help pay for her food, cat litter, warm bedding and veterinary care.

Why sponsor a pet?

Although every animal we care for is available for adoption, to the right home, there are some that will never settle in a home environment. Why? Because in their past lives, some have been cruelly treated, abused and abandoned and others are just too old and temperamental. It is our policy never to put a healthy animal down, so the cats and dogs that cannot be rehomed will live out their lives in a safe and loving environment cared for by the ACS.

By sponsoring a pet you will help us pay for food, upkeep, bedding, treats and veterinary care for those that cannot be rehomed. But even more importantly, by participating in this scheme you will help us to continue our work and give all the animals we care for a chance of a happy life.

How much does it cost?

Every sponsorship costs €52 per annum per animal and in return you will receive a photographic certificate of your pet, two letters a year updating you on your pet and a copy of our ACS newsletter.
